Shredders Can Improve Screw Press Performance

Frequently a screw press performs better if material is shredded before being admitted into the press. For that purpose Vincent Corporation offers a line of shredders. These are sized to bolt directly onto the inlet of Vincent screw presses.

The Vincent shredder is a horizontal machine with a 180 degree discharge area on the underside. It is ideally suited to bulky materials, such as citrus peel, whole fruit, and produce waste.

Shredder Operation

The blades, which are fixed, rotate on a horizontal shaft. These blades are made of heat treated stainless alloy. Blades sharpened to 45 degrees are used where the action required is more like slicing than smashing. We use these on pectin peel.

A key advantage is that the direction of rotation can be reversed to obtain double the life of the rotor. This is done by simply reversing two of the power lead wires to the motor.

The Vincent Shredder is well suited for wet and dry materials. Optimum performance is achieved with materials containing either more than 80% moisture or less than 20%.

In the Series VS machines, the shredded material is forced though a screen at the discharge. A variety of screens are available; different hole sizes are used for different materials. The holes have a square-round configuration.

Optionally, the shredders can be provided with a comb (or grill) at the discharge instead of a screen. This creates a scissor action, which is ideal for onion parchment. (This configuration is rarely used because it is highly susceptible to damage by tramp metal.)

Alternatively, the shredder can be operated with neither a screen nor comb in the discharge. This provides a coarse grind.

Shredder Housing Options

Shredder housings are easily un-bolted to ease the changing of screens and rotors. Washing and inspection are also facilitated.

In cases where the shredder is mounted over the inlet to a screw press, a discharge transition piece can be provided to fit the screw press being used.

The shredders have a square inlet. This will throw material upward as well as downward. Thus, a cover is required over the conveyor feeding material to the shredder. A dogleg inlet is provided with the smaller shredders which are hand fed.

The standard construction is a 304 stainless steel housing with a carbon steel base.
